Undergraduate Admissions

The Computer Engineering Degree is offered as an interdisciplinary program at the University of Virginia. Combining the resources and faculty of the Departments of Computer Science and Electrical & Computer Engineering, the Program instills in students the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will allow them to meet new challenges, contribute effectively as team members, and be innovators in computer hardware, software, design, analysis and applications. Students will leave the program with an excellent background in both Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of Computer Software Engineers to increase by 38% over the 2006 to 2016 period, generating about 324,000 new jobs. These increases are much greater than that for the average occupation. More details can be obtained from the BLS website.

Students are encouraged to participate in the many research projects of the faculty in both departments and are actively mentored throughout their studies. All undergraduate admissions are handled by the University Admissions office. Students applying to the University of Virginia (UVa) with a desire to major in Engineering must first apply to this office. Engineering students do not declare a major until the second year of the program. Graduate Admissions

The faculty of the Department of Computer Science and the Charles E. Brown Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering engaged in these research projects are eager to welcome Computer Engineering students who combine interest in hardware and software.  With an increasing emphasis on multidisciplinary research from funding agencies such as National Science Foundation and Department of Energy, this Program offers students the opportunity for fully-funded research assistantships while pursuing their degrees.  In addition, both departments offer teaching assistantships and fellowships which cover tuition and include a stipend.

Prospective Graduate Students apply directly to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The Graduate Office will forward applications to the program to which the student is applying. Computer Engineering only accepts applications for the Fall semester. First offers are made in early March. Please review the Frequently Asked Questions listed on the admissions page for specific guidelines and answers to many common questions.
