Orientation for New Graduate Students

Hello and Welcome

To those of you who have already arrived in Charlottesville,  I have enjoyed meeting each of you and look forward to a great year.  For those students who have not yet arrived, please stop by when you can to introduce yourself and go over any remaining issues and questions.  I am in E204 Thornton Hall and my hours are normally posted on the door.

International Students should have received a packet from the International Office with additional information. If not, here is a link to the Welcome Packet.

By now, I think each of you has activated your email address and obtained your Student ID Number.  If not, please refer to the letter from the Dean’s Office which can be found here.

Here is a New Student Checklist with guidelines for most of the tasks you have to complete during these first few weeks.  Please let me know if you have questions, I am here to help!

The schedule of the Computer Engineering (CpE) Orientation for new students is here.  As a graduate student in CpE, you are part of two Departments, Computer Science (CS) and Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE).  For that reason, you are invited to attend the CS Luncheon and the ECE Pizza Party.  However, you are not required to attend the orientations for the two departments.  Much of what is discussed will not apply to you and past student feedback indicates that it may even be confusing.  We will cover the same information as it applies to CpE students in our Orientation Session on Monday, August 24th at 9:00 in room C310, Thornton Hall.

Each of you will be assigned an office by the end of August and will have a computer to use.  If you have not yet received your office assignment, please contact me at nae5c@virginia.edu or in E204 Thornton Hall.

The Current Graduate students will be arranging a get together after classes begin so everyone can meet.  We have a great group of students who are very active both within the program, and throughout SEAS and the University.

The Computer Science Department has created an excellent guide for new students which can be found here.

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department does a short orientation on the afternoon of August 24th. You are invited to attend the Pizza party after the Orientation. Many of the Current CpE students will be attending also.
