New Graduate Student Information 2017

Welcome to Computer Engineering! We are excited to welcome you to the University of Virginia this Fall. Even if you are funded, we do not expect you to arrive until August 12, 2017. If you will be arriving later, please contact the CpE office here with your anticipated arrival date.

On this page are some resources to help you make a successful transition to UVa's Computer Engineering Program in the Departments of Computer Science and Electrical & Computer Engineering.


Before Arriving:

  • Registering your UVa email address -- The University Computer Operations is run by ITS (Information Technology Services). The website here will provide instructions for registering your email and setting up an account.

  • Financial Resources for first 4-6 weeks in Charlottesville -- The first stipends for TA and RA positions will not be received until August 25, 2017 or later. Although International students may be paid initially without a Social Security number, the student will still have to apply for a Social Security number. ISO will provide more information on the process at the orientation. We suggest that a student bring between $1500 and $2000 to cover your initial expenses.

  • Required and Recommended Immunizations and Screening Tests -- Be sure to return your Pre-Entrance Health form. If you misplace your form, you can download another copy here. More information about immunizations and screening tests can be found at the same website.

  • Registering for Health Insurance -- If you are receiving financial aid, you will be provided with health insurance. Please register with Aetna's student health website by September 1, 2017. Coverage begins on August 15, 2017.

When You Arrive:

  • Come check in with Natalie Edwards in 305 Rice Hall. Here you will confirm that all of your acceptance paperwork is in order and have all (or most!!) of your questions answered.

  • Attend all scheduled orientations and testing. At the Computer Engineering Orientation, we will go over the information you need to know to be successful in the program, and help complete your registion for classes.

  • Set up a bank account with a local bank so you can receive your stipend payments.

  • If you are an international student, check in with the International Studies Office in Minor Hall and attend an orientation.

  • To receive your University ID card you will need to go to the University ID Card Office, located in the Observatory Hill Dining Hall, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. after completion of your registration.  For information regarding the University ID Card Office visit  Please remember to bring with you a valid state or government issued picture identification card (either your U.S. driver’s license, passport, or U.S. military ID) in order to pick up your University ID. You will need to activate your U.Va. email account before you can receive your ID card.

  • Make appointment with Payroll to complete your I-9 form for receiving your pay check. You do not have to have received your Social Security Number yet. Please make an appointment at In order to receive your first paycheck, you must be signed up for payroll by August 21st.


Schedule of Events (2017):

Monday August 14 at 1000 and 1300 (1 pm) -- English Language Proficiency Exam (UVELPE) will be administered for all Internatioal Students whose first language was not English. Students must have their computer id and netbadge password to take the test. Please select your time at

NOTE: If you cannot attend the test on the 14th, another session will be given on August 20th. Sign up at CAELC

Monday August 14 -- SPEAK Test for non-native speakers employeed as teaching or research assistants. If you are required to take this part of the language exam, the Center for American and English Language and Culture (CAELC) will be in touch with you by email to schedule a time.

Wednesday August 16 at 1000 -- International Student Orientation -- all International Students are required to attend an Registration session in the Chemistry building room 402. Please bring your legal documents.

Thursday August 17 at 1000 -- Orientation and Group advising session for New ME students Rice 304

Thursday August 17 at 1200-- CPE Welcome Lunch for new and returning students, Rice 536.

Thursday August 17 at 1330 (1:30 pm) -- Orientation for New PhD and MS students Rice 304

Friday August 18 at 0800 - 0845 -- CS Breakfast Rice 120

Friday August 18 at 0900 -- CS Welcome by Chair Rice 130

Friday August 18 at 1115 - 1230 -- CS Luncheon for Graduate Students, both new and current. Rice Hall Davis Commons

Friday August 18 at 1300 (1 pm) - Engineering Graduate Student Orientation in Rice Hall 130

Friday August 18 at 1630 (4:30 pm) -- ECE Graduate Student Welcome, Pictures, and Dinner
