Undergraduate Degree Program

Overview

The primary objective of the undergraduate computer engineering program is to provide a solid education in the fundamentals of both computer science and electrical engineering. Graduates who satisfy the requirements of the computer engineering program will be prepared to either enter the workforce or continue their education in an appropriate graduate degree program. The program strives to help the students achieve excellent technical qualifications necessary to solve the engineering problems of tomorrow. It attempts to facilitate the development of problem-solving, group, and communication skills and strives to instill in the students the effects that technology can have on humanity through the study of social and ethical issues. The program attempts to instill in the students an understanding of the need and the desire for continuous self-renewal throughout their careers.

The curriculum has been carefully designed to assure that students obtain an excellent background in both Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. All Computer Engineering students work through an extended sequence of introductory, intermediate and advanced courses in both areas.

FAQ

1. How do I become a Computer Engineering Major?
   

   If you are a first year student, you may declare Computer Engineering as your major during the Spring semester of your first year. The process is called Major Declaration. To declare, obtain a form from the Undergraduate Office or from the Computer Engineering Office, meet with a CpE faculty person to discuss class selection, and turn the form into the CpE Office or the Undergraduate Office.
   
   

2. If you are transferring into CpE from another major, please contact the CpE Office to arrange an appointment with the Director of the Program. Bring a copy of your transcript to the meeting along with a copy of your proposed schedule for the next semester. After meeting with the Director, obtain a change of major form from the Undergraduate Office and complete the form.

3. Where is the Computer Engineering Office?
   

   E-wing of Thornton Hall in room E204. The office is the first door on your left at the back entrance to E-Thornton Hall near the entrance to the first floor of Olsson Hall.

   
   
4. If I dual major in CPE and CS or EE what degree do I get?
   

   A student has to choose one degree program as his/her major. The student can additionally complete all the requirements of a second degree program. In this case, there will be a notation at the top of the transcript which states that the student has completed all requirements of the second degree program.
   

5. How do I obtain an advisor?

   An advisor will be assigned to you when you are accepted into the Computer Engineering degree program. If you are transferring into the program, an advisor will be assigned to you after you meet with the director. If you wish to change your advisor, contact the Computer Engineering Office.
   

6. Do I need to sign-out my file for advising?

   You may have access to your file at any time, but you do not have to sign out your file prior to advising week. Your file will be given to your advisor in advance. To access your file, please come by the Computer Engineering Office in 204E Thornton Hall.
   

7. As a CPE major, am I in the CS department or the ECE department?

   Short answer: both. The CPE program is jointly administered by both the CS department and the ECE department. As a CPE major, you are a student in both departments. Although a separate mailing list is kept for CPE undergraduate and graduate students, students are also included in the CS and ECE mailing lists. All CPE students will receive announcements from the departments automatically. All courses in both CS and ECE are open to CPE students.
   

8. Can I minor in CPE?

No, we are currently not offering a minor in Computer Engineering.
